Program:
Jamie Devlin, Executive Director, Great Bay Chapter, ARC.
Jamie Devlin has been with the American Red Cross (ARC) for eight years, five in disaster recovery in MA and one year in our area.
ARC was started in 1880. First services were disaster relief and blood collection. Soon after, the military began to use the Red Cross for messaging service people with good or bad news from home. Core services now are emergency response and being prepared to help out fast. Response to natural disasters, such as hurricanes and floods, includes four basic necessities: clothes, a roof overhead, food, and mental health counseling.
We had a natural disaster last December with the ice storm. Power outages required the chapter to set up a shelter in Oyster River High School for 4 days. Carly Helly helped to facilitate that.
The ARC provided the first Swimming and Life Guard training because of the high incidence of drownings, and it is still being used today. CPR training was created by the ARC too.
50% of the nation's, and 100% of NH hospitals', blood supply is collected by the ARC. Under FDA supervision, ARC collections are safe. ARC provides training for those looking for a career move to that area.
How they are funded: 50% for services offered and 50% fundraising.
Megabucks:
Doc had the winning ticket and drew the winning card. He will take home about $160.00 KUDOS to the DOC.
