Mary Stampone: New Hampshirfe Climatology
Mary Stampone is an Assistant Professor of Geography at UNH and has been the NH State Climatologist since August 2008. Mary received her Ph.D. in Climatology and M.S. degree in Geography from the University of Delaware, and her B.A. degree in Geological Sciences from Albion College. Her research interests include climate system science with a focus on climate modeling. She currently teaches courses on weather, climate, natural hazards and landforms. Her office is currently housed at UNH, but is not state-funded. Mary's postion is generally considered a service position, providing historical data and detail.
Climate is what you expect, and weather is what you get! The wet cool weather we experienced this June and July was the result of the position of the jet stream bringing stormy weather conditions. Temperatures were 2-3 degrees cooler than last year, and the 6-7 inches of rain each month were above average for the period.
A weak El Nino has influenced US weather this past summer and will likely continue to influence it through this winter. If the past is any indication, the El Nino will likely cause New England's winter to be colder and snowier than normal.
