Program:
Dr. Stanley Swier, UNH Extension, Asian Longhorn Beetle
Dr. Swier gave a presentation on the Asian Longhorned Beetle. This invasive species arrives here from China, where it is uncontrolled, via wooden pallets and rolls.
These beetles have been discovered attacking trees, particularly sugar maple and birch, in Toronto, Chicago, Worcester, MA, and NY/NJ. They bore dime-sized holes into the tree trunk, eventually killing the tree. It's not yet in NH, but if not controlled, could seriously affect the logging, maple sugar and fall foliage/tourism industries.
Currently the only effective means of eliminating it is to remove the infected trees and destroy them by chipping and burning. Citizen watches have proven to be the most reliable means of early detection.
