Program: Doug Bancks, UNH Campus Planner
Our speaker talked about UNH's Master Plan and what has been, and will be, done. The book, entitled The Sustainable Learning Community, describes the ten-year transformation of a university through curriculum, operations, research, and engagement. UNH has the oldest endowed sustainability program in the country, founded in 1997. UNH is in the top 5% of the DOE's list of energy efficiency institutions and companies.
UNH's Campus Master Plan was published in 2004. Its goals are to maintain a relatively stable enrollment of about 12,000 students, renovate academic buildings, house 60% of the students on campus and reinforce/enhance the concept of a "walking" campus.
Since 2004, $190M has been spent to renovate five buildings, build a marine research facility and piers at the former New Castle Coast Guard Station, enhance a bus and transit system, and convert the old fossil-fueled energy plant to a co-generation plant. Using a pipeline that transfers methane gas from the Turnkey landfill in Rochester, the UNH energy plant now produces about 80% of the electricity used on campus. The waste heat from this electrical production is used to heat the campus in the winter and in the summer is condensed to provide water to the campus.
Upcoming developments:
- There have been a lot of rumors surrounding the New England Center. The facts are:
* it will close June 30.
* there are no plans to sell or demolish the Conference Center. Looking for ideas.
* the newer tower will be used to house students.
* the older tower will be mothballed.
- A letter of Intent has been signed with the Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord to join forces. It seems to be a win-win. The law center gets the name recognition of UNH and the university gets the premier international patents law school.
- Construction of the new Paul College of Business and Economics will begin soon across Garrison Road from Stoke Hall.
