Program:
Ian Stevenson, The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship
2000 fellows around the world - mostly medical school graduates from the US - have been selected for a one-year fellowship during which they launch a project to address the ills of the underserved.
Dr Schweitzer, a Rotarian in three countries, gave up a promising career in search of fulfillment and went to Africa in 1913 where he started the Albert Schweitzer hospital in Lambarene, French Equatorial Africa, the present-day Republic of Gabon. While there, he dedicated his life to "reverence for life".
Today, fellows living in every state but six, operate in eleven locations throughout the US, donating over 40,000 hours to serve some 25,000 clients. The reason they found the prospect of a life of service so attractive was illustrated in a brief video featuring several of the fellows. They are now starting to become more active internationally.
Their sources of funding are vetted and include schools, individuals and major philanthropies.
