Program:

Larry Brickner-Wood, UNH Waysmeet Center

Waysmeet has been on campus for 65 years, and has been at its current 15 Mill Rd location since 1985.  Waysmeet is named to mean where "all ways meet."  It began as a small independent non-profit organization, and has evolved into an interfaith diverse population.

There are 7-8 students from other countries in residence.  Most are paying their own way to UNH, and many have seen terrible tragedies.  The rent at Waysmeet is 50% less than the going rate for the dorm.  It's a great discount and still allows the center to accomplish its mission.

Cornucopia Food Pantry where those who have can provide for those who need.  Weekly donations to the Food Pantry allow for turkeys at Christmas and food baskets four times a year.  The last basket distribution helped 185 families.

Flames of Hope.  Generally this program helps people in trouble or in need of advice, cars, bikes, legal help, shoes, food preparation, or reuniting families.

There are over 400 volunteers at Waysmeet.  It is also a good laboratory for asking "why" or what are the causes of problems of folks coming to the food pantry.  It also provides good service and management opportunities  to UNH students.

About the anthax expenience at Waysmeet.  A woman contracted the disease possibly at a drum circle ceremony.  The Department of Public Health came to test the Center around the Christmas holiday and the building was not livable for four months.  Students were able to move back in on April 16th.  The Center has been cleaned out and repainted.  The Center is still short of computers, books, and other items that had to be thrown away.  Community gardens have been built and the Food Pantry is open every week.  Waysmeet is asking for volunteers.

Megabucks:

Matt (guest) had the ticket but couldn't find card.

Upcoming Programs:

June 9     Beth Mattingly, Carsey Institute

June 16   Club Forum

June 23   Mark Brazzard, Renewable Energy
