Rotaract (Rotary in Action) is a service club for young professionals and students ages 18-30. Its goals are to develop professional and leadership skills, emphasize respect for the rights of others based on recognition of the worth of each individual; recognize, practice, and promote ethical standards as leadership qualities and vocational responsibilities; develop knowledge and understanding of the needs, problems, and opportunities in the community and worldwide; and provide opportunities for personal and grouup activities to serve the community and promote international understanding and goodwill. Today there are more than 7,500 clubs in 162 countries with an estimated membership of 170,000.
Rotary International issued a Certificate of Organization for the Rotaract Club on April 15, 2007. The club draws its membership from the student body of the University of New Hampshire. The approximately 20 members have participated in the Durham community dinner and assisted other UNH organizations with their community service projects. They have initiated an annual Halloween for the Hungry campus-wide food drive, and Caroling at Spruce Woods. This year they are helping the Dover Housing Department to serve Thanksgiving Dinner to Seniors, sending a team of runners to UNH's Relay for Life, running a clothing drive called Jeans for Teens, participating in the Rotary Club's semi-annual Roadside Clean-up, selling Vlaentine's Day Candygrams to raise money for Rotary International's Polio Fund, and participating in UNH's Alternative Break Challenge (unh.edu/abc).
The UNH Rotaract Club is always looking for new members -- any UNH student (undergrad or grad) interested in learning more is encouraged to stop by a meeting or contact President Kerry Murchie.
