Announcements

Pres-elect Steve: We're covered for the hockey game with Merrimack College this week.

Anon: Rather than buying cartons of coffee, we can make it here.  We have a donated coffee pot that would do the job, but we have to find it first.

Bill: Recall that Christmas basket turkeys (and hams, this year) are funded by our members with a match from the charitable account.  Our plan is to distribute 180 turkeys to Waysmeet, Lee Church and Newmarket, and 40 hams to St Thomas More.  The bill will come to $2,400, so the club will match $1,200 from the members.  At this point, we're at $400.  In other news, we haven't set the delivery dates yet, so stay tuned.

Program

Phil brought us our guest speaker this morning, Marian Naronha, founder and CEO of TurboCam.  Marian grew up in a boarding school in India.  When he was 9, he was taken by the story of the Berlin Wall, and decided he had a solution and that was to design a machine to tunnel deep under the wall.  He sent his final design to the Pentagon.  As an indicator of his commitment to those locked behind the wall, he spent his entire month's allowance on the stamps.

The next milestone in his life came in Montreal where he took a graduate degree from McGill and acquired an interest in wind turbines.  A  job with a company in Norwich, VT followed making wind turbines.  He didn't have a work visa so he worked for free.  Without an income, he lived frugally in a 10x16 cabin without electricity or running water.  He built a social circle of friendships at a welcoming church across the river st Dartmouth, and three years out of India converted to Christianity.

Over time, he was persuaded that wind turbine manufacturing doesn't pay without government subsidies, and decided that he could make more of an impact in the field of energy conservation.  When CAD/CAM was just taking off, he worked for a company just starting to use it, and became familiar with its use in designing tools.

He founded TurboCam in Madbury in 1985.  Its mission if a little different: for the purpose of honoring God, creating wealth for its employees, and supporting Christian service to God and people.  The company has come to be the gold standard for precision manufacturing of impellers for rocket, aircraft and diesel engines world wide.  The designs and production are so advanced that their use is saving companies significant fuel costs. That's energy conservation in action.  Today, TurboCam has operations in Barrington, India, Taiwan, Romania, Netherlands, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates employing over 1,000.

Marian didn't have time to tell us about the work he is doing with kids in S. Africa, India and Nepal.  When we have him back for the third time, he can fill us in.

Is it the truth?  Is it fair to all concerned?  Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
