Program
Joan Correl of the Hampton Rotary Club spoke to us about her participation in the District's cultural exchange (the successor program to Group Study Exchange) to Kakamega, Kenya last Spring. An orphanage there was founded in 1994 to shelter the large number of children who had lost their parents to AIDs. The club in Freeport later took the initiative to build a modern structure to house 50 children. Since that modest beginning, the orphanage has morphed into a hub for a wide variety of programs reaching out to villages to provide educational and health services. It's latest effort, called Strong Young Women, provides ongoing support to young women it has identified in the surrounding area who show great promise for further education and leadership roles.
