Program
Chuck Goss offered us a look into his life and times. A native of New Hampshire, Chuck attended Exeter and Dartmouth before moving into commercial real estate. He took an Executive MBA at UNH where he was smitten by an attractive young lady in the program who unfortunately was already spoken for, but (Chuck's luck!) had a twin sister in Springfield. Beth was a talent at the ABC affiliate there. She and Chuck became affiliated and returned to the area where she shared her talent with NH PBS.
Chuck and Beth live at the "Powder Major" farm on Cherry Lane in Madbury. It was originally the home of Captain DeMerritt who stole the British gunpowder from what is now known as Fort Constitution in September of 1774 and brought it back to his home until it was needed at Breed's Hill by the NH regiment. Their home is 300 years old - the oldest in Madbury - and has been in his family for many generations. It sits on 240 acres, all but 40 acres of which was put into conservatorship with the Society for the Preservation of NH Forests recently.
When asked about his affiliation with the American Independence Museum in Exeter, he recounted how the Society of the Cincinnati (descendants - he among them - of Washington's officers) asked him to help get it up and running. After many trials and tribulations, it's thriving now.
Chuck is no longer in commercial real estate. He has undertaken a new mission on site with an Event Center that can handle groups of 150 people (
www.powdermajorsfarm.com). He offered us the opportunity to meet there the next time we need an alternative to Flag Hill. We're glad to have this history nut on board.
