Pres. Tom: We've been invited by Kiwanis to join with them in a fundraiser serving food at six UNH home football games this fall beginning on Sep 8th. Promising visibility. They're looking for a minimum of 4 (could include spouses and Rotaractors) to a maximum of 12. The club would be compensated at the rate of $50/person for each shift worked. The club voted to approve ... He proposed scheduling three meetings (in a four week month) each month at Flag Hill with the fourth set aside for a project. Club voted to approve ... We inducted Stephanie Douglas, transferring from the Greater Corvallis, OR club where she served as Secretary. Welcome!
Frank R: Announced that he would be setting up breakfast and program schedules on Google Docs much like Andy has set up the Bingo sign-up.
Program
Three young members of the District's RotaryYouthLeadershipAwards staff, led by Emily Rumble, spoke to us about the purpose of the program. The four-day program is designed to develop the individual leadership skills of rising high school juniors in a group setting.
The staff of 50 adult facilitators works with up to 200 students at Camp Hinds in Raymond, ME to bring out their leadership potential. The program begins with building trust among the students, and moves through challenging exercises in the low ropes and high ropes courses, concluding with a campfire and reflection. Throughout the two courses, the challenge is framed for the students who need to develop a plan to overcome the obstacle. After each obstacle, the facilitators work with the students to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their plan.
Students are encouraged to keep a journal to reflect their developing understanding of how to work within groups to accomplish a task. Testimonials acquired from alums of the program are in agreement that the program, though short, made a significant impact on their skills and self-confidence. In answer to a member's question, Emily estimated that Camp Hinds could handle up to 500 students. Learn more at RYLA7780.org
Ric noted that RYLA in our district began in 1990 when Durham-Great Bay and Dover put on the first camp here at UNH.
